The Virginia Veterinary Center (VVC) in Short Pump, VA is hiring a full- time Veterinary Lab Technician to join our team!

Position Overview:
The Laboratory Technician is responsible for supporting veterinarians in diagnostic processes by performing in-house laboratory tests and procedures essential for diagnosing and treating animals. The technician must demonstrate proficiency with laboratory equipment, a solid understanding of veterinary laboratory protocols, and strong attention to detail to ensure accurate and timely test results.

Primary Responsibilities:
Sample Collection & Handling:
  • Collect, prepare, and process various biological samples (blood, urine, feces, tissue, etc.) following veterinary and laboratory protocols.
  • Ensure accurate labeling and tracking of all samples.
  • Diagnostic Testing:
  • Perform in-house diagnostic testing, including: Complete Blood Counts, Blood Chemistry Panels, Urinalysis, Fecal Analysis and Parasite Identification, Cytology (skin, ears, fine needle aspirates), SNAP and ELISA tests for common diseases (e.g, heartworm, FeLV/FIV, parovirus)
Equipment Operation & Management: 
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment (hematology analyzers, chemistry analyzers, microscopes, centrifuges).
  • Troubleshoot basic equipment issues and report malfunctions to management.
Quality Control & Compliance:
  • Follow established quality control procedures to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory space in accordance with safety and biohazard regulations.
  • Adhere to OSHA, AAHA, and other regulatory guidelines.
Collaboration & Communication:
  • Communicate test results and diagnostic input to veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
  • Document laboratory findings clearly in patient records using veterinary management software.
  • Communicate effectively regarding test interpretations and urgencies.
Inventory Management:
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and reorder as necessary.

Qualifications:
Education & Certification:
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field (preferred).
Experience:
  • 1-2 years of experience in a veterinary clinic, hospital, or laboratory preferred.
  • Familiarity with veterinary laboratory equipment and diagnostics.
Skills:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in lab work.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to handle biological samples safely.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Salary:
  • Compensation is based on experience and skill set. $20 - 28/hr

Schedule:
  • 4/10 hour shifts per week
  • Weekend's and holiday's as needed
