Veterinary Specialty Technician - Per Diem

*This is a Per Diem position. Schedule to TBD post training. Schedules are subject to change based off the needs of the Hospital and the Department. Training Days/Hours TBD**

**This position will pay $25-$34 hourly DOE**

***This position requires strong anesthesia knowledge and skill.***

Overall Responsibility:  The Specialty Technicians primary responsibility is to support all Specialty Services where needed.  Provides history, vitals, and concerns to doctors to assist in the timely and appropriate management patients.  Works with other specialty department technicians and assistants to perform diagnostics, execute treatment plans, assist with surgeries and or monitor anesthesia.  Communicates medical updates, financials, and treatment plans to owners when necessary. 

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates patient care of outpatient appointments for specialty departments —consults and rechecks.
  • Performs IV, IM and SQ injections, IV catheter placements and advanced veterinary technician skills (arterial catheter placement, epidural administration, splint placements).
  • Performs radiographs.
  • Assists with all types of surgery, anesthesia, and other procedures as needed.
  • Participate in surgery team responsibilities that facilitate efficient patient care: setting up and turning over Operating Rooms, preparing exam rooms and instruments, completing daily safety and cleaning duties.
  • Under the supervision of the Anesthesiologist and Surgeons, administers medication and manages/monitors patients during surgical procedures—including pre and post op care and anesthesia recovery.
  • Perform and assist with all aspects of animal restraint for exams and procedures.
  • Utilizes Ezyvet and Smartflow for documentation of patient care.
  • Communicates with clients, including financial estimates and collecting payment.
  • Interfaces with and assists other departments within the hospital as needed.
  • Other duties as needed.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of financial and charging practices including creating estimates and discussing with the owners, collecting payment and discharging patients. 
  • Collaborate with all departments across the hospital to ensure that all patients are receiving the best possible patient care
  • Demonstrate compassion and care in all interactions
  • Attend department and staff meetings
  • Contribute to the overall needs, cleanliness and organization of the hospital.
  • Other duties as needed.

Minimum Requirements: High School diploma or equivalent required.  At least 1 year of animal experience required. At least 2 years of anesthesia experience required. Veterinary Technician Certification/Registration required.

Preferred Requirements: Strong technical skills to provide excellent and efficient patient care. Ability to multitask and anticipate needs. Excellent communication skills in all areas including clients, staff, and leadership. Great work ethic and positive attitude. Ability to adhere to strict attendance policies.  Ability to handle fluctuation caseload and emergency situations.

Physical Requirements: This job is physically active and may require frequent bending. It also requires routine lifting and restraining of animals in excess of 50 pounds. The employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and use hands. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.

Language Ability: Ability to speak in an understandable manner and understand the English language.

Skill Requirements: Strong ability to multitask and anticipate needs. Excellent communication with staff, and between staff, and upper management.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee will encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The work environment is predominantly indoors with occasional outdoor exposure when walking patients. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals related to veterinary medicine.
