Veterinary Charge Nurse – Emergency & Critical Care

$30–$36/hour + $2/hour Overnight Differential | Peoria, AZ | Full-Time

Schedule: Choose a 4/10 or 3/12 schedule. Overnight shift is 7 p.m.–7 a.m. with one weekend day required. Earn an additional $2/hour for hours worked between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center (AVECCC) is hiring an experienced Veterinary Charge Nurse to lead our overnight support team at our high-volume, 24-hour emergency and critical care veterinary hospital in Peoria, AZ. This is a leadership opportunity for an experienced veterinary professional who can keep teams engaged, maintain clinical and service standards, coach staff, and ensure smooth hospital operations throughout the overnight shift.

In Your Day-to-Day You Will

Lead the Overnight Team

  • Serve as the primary support staff leader during the overnight shift

  • Lead by example while maintaining a calm, professional, and supportive environment during high-volume periods

  • Mentor veterinary technicians, assistants, client service staff, and other overnight support team members

  • Conduct beginning-of-shift huddles to establish priorities, staffing expectations, and key patient or operational updates

  • Monitor staff performance and ensure responsibilities are completed appropriately throughout the shift

  • Ensure veterinary medical techniques, hospital policies, and procedures are consistently followed

  • Reinforce positive and compassionate customer service with every client interaction

Coach & Develop Employees

  • Partner with the Training Coordinator to ensure employees receive appropriate onboarding, training, and ongoing development

  • Identify opportunities for employee growth and provide hands-on coaching and mentorship

  • Address performance deficiencies promptly and partner with the Leadership Team when additional corrective action is needed

  • Follow up on coaching and training to ensure expectations are being implemented

  • Document training and coaching sessions

  • Participate in staff leveling and performance review processes

  • Support department-specific training and help develop curriculum for ARISE Academy

Maintain Overnight Communication

  • Act as the communication bridge between overnight support staff and hospital leadership

  • Ensure important information, concerns, and operational updates are communicated appropriately

  • Conduct regular team check-ins and participate in Leadership Team meetings

  • Identify operational or staffing concerns that require leadership attention and escalate them appropriately

  • Promote transparency, accountability, and constructive communication across the team

  • Help ensure continuity between overnight and daytime operations

Keep Hospital Operations Moving

  • Monitor hospital areas and ensure departments remain organized, functional, and appropriately staffed

  • Help resolve client concerns and complaints when appropriate

  • Identify operational deficiencies and take a solution-oriented approach to resolving them

  • Partner with the inventory specialist to maintain appropriate department inventory levels and avoid shortages or excess

  • Ensure overnight operations remain compliant with OSHA requirements and hospital safety standards

  • Participate in the development and implementation of policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs)

  • Support a seamless patient, client, and team experience throughout the overnight shift

What We’re Looking For

  • Previous experience in a veterinary emergency, critical care, or specialty hospital

  • Veterinary technician or veterinary nursing background with demonstrated leadership experience

  • Experience mentoring, training, coaching, or supervising veterinary support staff

  • Strong understanding of veterinary clinical procedures and patient care

  • Ability to lead effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume emergency environment

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and address performance concerns professionally

  • Excellent organization and ability to prioritize competing needs

  • Solution-oriented approach to problem-solving

  • Ability to work independently while maintaining strong communication with hospital leadership

  • Commitment to employee development, teamwork, and exceptional patient and client care

  • Veterinary technician license or certification preferred
