Veterinary Laboratory Technician
We are looking for a full-time Veterinary Laboratory Technician support our outstanding Emergency and Specialty teams on 1st shift!
Overview: The Laboratory Technician is responsible for supporting veterinarians in diagnostic processes by performing in-house laboratory tests and procedures essential for diagnosing and treating animals. The technician must demonstrate proficiency with laboratory equipment, a solid understanding of veterinary laboratory protocols, and strong attention to detail to ensure accurate and timely test results.
Primary Responsibilities
Sample Collection & Handling:
- Prepare and process various biological samples (blood, urine, feces, tissue, etc.) following veterinary and laboratory protocols.
- Ensure accurate labeling and tracking of all samples.
- Perform in-house diagnostic testing, including, but not limited to, Complete Blood Counts, Blood Chemistry Panels, Urinalysis, Fecal Analysis and Parasite Identification, Cytology (skin, ears, fine needle aspirates), SNAP and ELISA tests for common diseases (e.g, heartworm, FeLV/FIV, parovirus)
- Assist with preparation and shipment of samples for outside lab submission.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment including, but not limited to hematology analyzers, chemistry analyzers, microscopes, and centrifuges.
- Troubleshoot basic equipment issues and report malfunctions to management.
- Follow established quality control procedures to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory space in accordance with safety and biohazard regulations.
- Adhere to OSHA and other regulatory guidelines.
- Communicate test results and diagnostic input to veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
- Document laboratory findings clearly in patient records using veterinary management software.
- Monitor and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and reorder as necessary.
Education & Certification:
- An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field is preferred.
- A current Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) license is desired.
- 3 years of experience in a veterinary clinic, hospital, or laboratory setting.
- Comfortable with veterinary laboratory equipment and diagnostics.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in lab work.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to handle biological samples safely.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- Compensation starts at $22 but has the potential to increase based on experience, licensure, and/or education.
- This is a first shift position, Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day. Based on hospital needs, at least one weekend day a month, paid as overtime, will be required.
