As a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) in the Anesthesia Department at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, you are an integral member of a highly specialized team dedicated to providing exceptional anesthesia care for patients undergoing advanced diagnostic, surgical, and interventional procedures. Working in a specialty and emergency referral hospital, the Anesthesia LVT collaborates closely with board-certified anesthesiologists, surgeons, specialty clinicians, and technical staff to provide safe, individualized anesthetic care for a diverse and often critically ill patient population.
The Anesthesia LVT is responsible for all phases of anesthesia, including patient assessment, anesthetic planning, induction, maintenance, recovery, pain management, physiologic monitoring, and emergency response. This role requires advanced technical skills, sound clinical judgment, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to recognize subtle changes in patient status while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and advocacy.
In addition to direct patient care, the Anesthesia LVT serves as a clinical resource throughout the hospital by supporting specialty departments requiring anesthesia or sedation, maintaining anesthesia equipment and medications, ensuring accurate medical documentation, and contributing to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. Success in this position requires professionalism, adaptability, effective communication, and a commitment to collaborative, compassionate patient care.
Responsibilities:
Specialty Patient Support
- Provide anesthesia and sedation support for patients undergoing surgical, diagnostic, and interventional procedures throughout the hospital.
- Collaborate with specialty clinicians and technical staff to ensure safe, efficient patient care.
- Adapt anesthetic support based on patient condition and procedural requirements.
- Assist with patient preparation and recovery for a variety of specialty procedures.
- Prepare, inspect, operate, and maintain anesthesia-related equipment in accordance with hospital policies and manufacturer recommendations.
- Calculate, prepare, administer, and document anesthetic medications and controlled substances accurately.
- Maintain appropriate inventory and readiness of anesthesia supplies and emergency equipment.
- Report equipment concerns and participate in quality assurance activities.
- Complete accurate and timely anesthesia records.
- Document patient assessments, treatments, medications, monitoring parameters, and recovery information.
- Maintain complete controlled substance documentation in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure medical records meet hospital and legal documentation standards.
- Participate in emergency response efforts and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as directed.
- Assist with emergency airway management, medication preparation, and advanced life support procedures.
- Maintain readiness of emergency equipment and supplies.
- Support patient stabilization during emergency situations.
- Collaborate effectively with anesthesiologists, veterinarians, technicians, assistants, and support staff to provide exceptional patient care.
- Assist with training and mentoring employees, interns, externs, and students as assigned.
- Promote respectful communication, teamwork, and a positive work environment.
- Support departmental initiatives, quality improvement projects, and continuing education.
- Maintain current Texas Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) licensure.
- Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, integrity, and compassion in all interactions.
- Follow all hospital policies, departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and patient safety initiatives.
- Maintain competency through continuing education and professional development.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
- High school diploma is required.
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) in Texas
- A minimum of three (3) years of clinical veterinary anesthesia experience is required.
- Candidates should demonstrate advanced knowledge of anesthetic principles, patient monitoring, analgesia, perioperative nursing care, and emergency patient management.
- Strong technical skills including venipuncture, catheter placement, medication administration, and patient monitoring.
- Knowledge of anesthesia monitoring, radiology safety, and fluid therapy.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced emergency environment.
- Fluent English speaking and reading skills required; multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
