Emergency Department Technician Supervisor - DCES

The ER Department Supervisor is expected to perform both technical and administrative functions to ensure that the ER runs smoothly 24/7. The overall purpose of this position is to be a liaison between doctors and technicians, to perform technician duties at an advanced level, and to provide leadership, mentorship, supervision and coordination for the team. The ER Department supervisor is responsible for ensuring the team adheres to and understands DCES policies and procedures to ensure quality patient and client care. The ER Department Supervisor reports directly to the Hospital Operations Manager.

Minimum Qualifications:
Skills:
- Basic computer knowledge in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and E-mail especially)
- Adequate typing skills (30 wpm)
- Electronic PIMS and Whiteboard experience preferred

Education:
Graduation from an accredited veterinary technology program and/or RVT is strongly preferred
Experience:
- At least two years' experience in an Emergency/ICU or specialty setting is required
- Scheduling experience is strongly preferred

Ability to fill shifts at various times (days, evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays) is required.
Specific Duties:
The Emergency Department Supervisor must excel at the duties required of all veterinary technicians as well as the following:
Team Maintenance and Development:
- Assisting Operations Manager to determine overall technician staffing needs to ensure optimal daily operations
- Filling in shifts or arranging coverage in the event of absences
- Helping Operations Manager to coordinate working interviews for new technician candidate
- Completing and delivering team member performance evaluations and check-ins on a regular schedule
- Deliver corrective action or performance improvement plans in collaboration with HR and Operations Manager.
- Act as a mentor and subject matter expert on the treatment floor, fostering and environment of education where team members can continue to advance their skills
Team Communications:
- Delivers feedback to team members constructively, to help to strengthen future performance
- Ensure that information is distributed amongst and understood by entire team, verbally, via email, in writing, and via SharePoint team site
- Assist with updating team on new policy, procedures, marketing events or DCES sponsored engagements events
- Communicates in a compassionate and reassuring manner with clients to help resolve any problems that arise during shifts, or may be liaison between hospital leadership and client where necessary to ensure that we work toward a resolution
- Schedules and conducts regular technical team meetings (in person and/or virtual), and provide written notes to team members, ER DVMs, and hospital leadership
Schedule:
- Determines how many people and shifts are needed based on time of day and average caseload
- Maintains and participates in an on-call system to ensure coverage for absences
- Point of contact for call outs and contacting team members for coverage
- Ensures schedule is completed by monthly deadline to ensure it is published on time for the team
- Reviews schedule and time sheets for accuracy before each payroll, and updates on-call logs as necessary for payroll manager
- Works 4 days per week on average to provide appropriate oversight of their team
- Performs audits of timesheets on a weekly basis to assist with payroll accuracy
- Assists hospital leadership in coordinating attendance for meetings regarding compliance, training, benefits, etc.

- Builds a strong and diverse team by continually recruiting, selecting, and developing competent and talented people
- Knows and utilizes the skills and resources of the individual technical team members, delegating tasks as appropriate
- Understands the training/education needs of individuals within the technical team, and assists Onboarding and Education Coordinator with implementing a training plan to help deliver the highest quality care to our patients and clients
- Able to effectively teach new skills to current and new technicians as required
- Effectively measures performance, and holds team members accountable for progress and meeting goals
- Coordinates with lead technicians and team members on the floor to ensure that all needed technical duties are performed in an organized and timely manner
- Communicates regularly with DVM team members to understand and help to remedy any workflow or efficiency issues
- Helps to establish and maintain safe procedures for staff in compliance with OSHA and EPA
- Helps to plan ahead for busy days and seasons by communicating staffing needs to Hospital Director and Operations Manager as early as possible, and taking initiative to make necessary changes
Inventory and Equipment:
- Helping to ensure that diets, drugs, and hospital supply inventory remains at optimum levels by encouraging the use of the Want List and modeling responsibility to communicate stock shortages to Inventory Manager
- Inform Inventory Manager of any shortages or higher than typical use of supplies, to ensure appropriate stock levels are maintained
- Inform Facility Operations Manager of any hazards or issues with equipment as soon as they are known, and aid in troubleshooting as necessary
- Make requests for new products and equipment as needed, providing details for Inventory Manager to research
- Help to maintain laboratory machines and other diagnostic equipment as needed
- Assist in team training and accountability to ensure appropriate handling of equipment and minimize breakage
Hospital Medical Logs:
- Help to ensure that team members are utilizing Cubex appropriately to maintain accurate logs for controlled drugs
- Help to ensure that blood products are invoiced and logged
- Inform Hospital Operations Manager of any discrepancies in logs, and aid in resolution of discrepancies

Physical demand and work environment:
- Ability to lift 50lbs with assistance
- Ability to safely restrain pets of different sizes and demeanors
- Ability to work days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays
- The noise level in the work environment may be moderately high
- May be exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances with required PPE
- Bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, standing, lifting, and walking during a shift up to 12 hours are part of day to day work activities.
