  • Assess patient pain and comfort and assist with the development and implementation of appropriate analgesic protocols.
  • Provide technical support throughout surgical procedures, anticipating the needs of the surgeon and assisting with the safe and efficient completion of procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed anesthesia records, documenting anesthetic events, patient responses, medications, monitoring data, and interventions.
  • Recognize potential anesthetic complications and utilize knowledge of physiology and disease processes to help prevent, identify, and mitigate patient risk.
  • Provide post-operative patient care, including recovery from anesthesia, additional diagnostics or procedures as indicated, and safe transfer to recovery or critical care.
  • Ensure anesthesia and monitoring equipment is properly maintained, functional, cleaned, and ready for use.
  • Collaborate closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, assistants, interns, externs, and other hospital departments to ensure coordinated, high-quality patient care.
  • Develop an understanding of surgeon preferences, workflows, and procedural needs to anticipate requirements and improve efficiency within the surgical service.
  • Participate in team meetings and service development, contributing to anesthesia and surgical protocols, procedures, and workflow improvements.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for the nursing team, providing guidance, mentorship, and training to new and existing staff.
  • Provide continuing education, in-service training, and other learning opportunities outside of the operating room to support ongoing technical and professional development.
  • Stay current with advancements in veterinary anesthesia, analgesia, pain management, and patient monitoring.
  • Participate in workshops, seminars, continuing education, and other professional development opportunities to expand clinical knowledge and maintain advanced technical skills.
  • Practice within established professional scope and under veterinary direction while recognizing limitations and collaborating with the medical team when additional expertise or clinical decision-making is required.
