The Virginia Veterinary Center in Short Pump, VA is hiring a full- time Veterinary Assistant to join our Radiology team! 

Position Overview:

  • Provide support to the veterinarian and veterinary technician as directed within the Radiology Department; provide professional and efficient client service.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Obtain patient vitals and report any abnormalities to a Licensed Veterinary Technician and/or Veterinarian(s)
  • Collecting diagnostic samples, imaging, and non-laboratory diagnostics (BP, EKG, SPO2) for analysis while understanding normal parameter markers to help facilitate in next steps of diagnostic preparation and communication to Licensed Veterinary Technicians and/or Veterinarian(s).
  • Assist in placement and maintenance of intravenous catheters.
  • Assist Licensed Veterinary Technicians and/or Veterinarians in all aspects during procedures from developing anesthetic protocol, administration of pre-medications and induction agents, intubation, surgical prep, maintenance and monitoring of general anesthesia, assist in surgical procedure as needed, recovery care of patients post anesthetic episodes, proper medical documentation of anesthesia monitoring, and understanding side effects of anesthetic agents being administered
  • Assist in induction and sedation of patients with a Licensed Veterinary Technician and/or Veterinarian(s)
  • Setup, assist, and clean up following all daily procedures and operations such as biopsies, CT, Tube Placements, and other diagnostic/anesthetic procedures, while also understanding the proper materials and equipment needed for each procedure
  • Restraining patients accurately and safely for diagnostic imaging, such as but not limited to, direct digital radiology, ultrasonography, and venipuncture
  • Assist in the collection and proper handling of certain samples such as biopsies, and how to submit them to outside laboratories
  • Assist in the conduction of outpatient appointments and understanding the process of the appointment
  • General radiology knowledge including but not limited to:
  • Radiation safety
  • Radiographic positioning techniques required for multiple specie
  • Radiographic/fluoroscopic special procedure imaging
  • General radiology knowledge
  • Special procedures
  • Radiographic positioning
  • Image quality control
  • Pharmacology
  • Basic knowledge of advanced imaging modalities used for veterinary imaging including; CT, MRI, Ultrasound
  • Basic knowledge of:
  • Routine use and common studies performed
  • Modality specific safety
  • Imaging protocols required for specific disease processes
  • General physics
  • Common artifacts and signs of equipment failure
  • Practicing patient and empathetic client service skills when communicating with clients at all stages of their visit, such as when triaging, discharging, or providing medical updates on hospitalized patients
  • Properly discharge patients by filling all required medications, ensuring patients are clean and comfortable, removing intravenous catheters, approving final invoices, and reviewing discharges with pet owners
  • Help to restock supplies throughout the day to ensure proficiencies and efficiencies
  • Assist in weekly inventory checks and notifying inventory manager of items that need replenishing
  • Able to understand and function within the electronic practice management software to locate and pull previous medical records and to start initial records for each appointment
  • Understanding and able to perform proper medical record documentation in accordance with hospital policy and the board of veterinary medical standard
  • Conducting yourself in a professional manner each shift while providing continued support to your team members, patients, and client
  • Following proper OSHA protocols and ensure OSHA related trainings are conducted by designated timelines to ensure a safe work environment for yourself and team members
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by leadership and direct supervisors while on shift.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Speaking directly with clients and other hospital team members, excellent communication skills is valuable and important
  • Ability to work in a team environment by taking direction and assisting other medical team members
  • Exemplifies a strong work ethic, with a positive attitude
  • Able to multitask and work under pressure
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull above 50lbs and stand for prolonged periods of time

Based on employee interest, Veterinary Assistant Certification and/or Licensed Veterinary Technician Program Financial assistance may be available.

Shift Details:

  • 4- 10-hour shifts per week.
  • 1- 12-hour shift per month required (ER coverage)
  • Holiday coverage as needed. (You will be required to work some holidays but not all)

Compensation:

  • Based on experience & skill set. Ranging from $17- 19/hr.
