Job Description
The Veterinary Sterilization Technician is responsible for the cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and inventory management of surgical instruments and medical equipment used throughout the hospital. This role is essential in supporting our Surgery, Neurology, and Internal Medicine teams by ensuring all instruments and equipment are properly processed, sterilized, and readily available for scheduled and emergency procedures.
This position does not involve direct patient care and instead focuses on maintaining the highest standards of sterilization, infection control, and instrument readiness to support exceptional clinical outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Collect, receive, and decontaminate used surgical instruments and equipment from various hospital departments.
- Manually clean instruments and operate ultrasonic cleaners, instrument washers, and other processing equipment.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, wear, and damage while reporting concerns to leadership.
- Assemble surgical packs and instrument trays according to established count sheets and department standards.
- Package instruments using appropriate sterilization wraps, pouches, and containers.
- Operate steam autoclaves and ethylene oxide (EO) sterilizers according to manufacturer recommendations and hospital protocols.
- Monitor sterilization cycles and interpret biological and chemical indicators to ensure effective sterilization.
- Handle and process specialized equipment, including laparoscopic cameras, endoscopes, arthroscopes, and powered surgical instruments.
- Maintain organized sterile storage areas and manage inventory to ensure availability for both routine and emergency procedures.
- Adhere to all infection control and safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles, equipment maintenance, and inventory management.
- Assist with onboarding and training of new team members as needed.
- Identify opportunities to improve workflow efficiency and sterilization processes.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous sterile processing experience in a veterinary or human healthcare setting strongly preferred.
- Experience handling surgical instrumentation and specialty equipment is highly desirable.
- Understanding of sterilization principles, infection control procedures, and instrument maintenance preferred.
- Ability to learn and operate specialized sterilization equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to stand and move throughout the majority of the workday.
- Fluent English speaking and reading skills required; multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
