Veterinary Referral Center (VRC) is a comprehensive, referral specialty & emergency critical care veterinary hospital in Malvern, Pennsylvania. We are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for appointments, advanced imaging, surgery and emergency/critical care services. At our hospital, you'll be working alongside a large team of experienced & board-certified veterinarians with advanced specialized training who utilize the latest innovations in medicine and technology to treat companion animals. Our veterinary services include trauma treatment and critical care, medical oncology, radiation therapy oncology, cardiology, internal medicine, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, dentistry/oral surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, MRI and CT, endoscopy, rehabilitation, and emergency services.
We are looking to add a skilled ICU/ER Veterinary Technician. By joining VRC, you will be supported by a team of excellent nurses and assistants along with our team of highly trained ER doctors, including two board certified critical care specialists. We utilize the latest innovations in medicine and technology to treat companion animals on an emergency basis and/or long-term ailments.
As a Veterinary Technician in our Emergency/ICU department, you will play a crucial role in the care and treatment of critically ill and emergency patients. Under the supervision of specialists, emergency doctors, and department leaders, you will provide essential triage, nursing, and monitoring, ensuring our patients receive the highest quality care throughout their stay.
Responsibilities:
Provide advanced monitoring and care for dynamically ill and unstable critical care patients such as, but limited to: polytraumas, KDAs, sepsis, respiratory and cardiac disease.
Obtains vitals and maintains progressive nursing notes in electronic patient care system (SmartFlow)
Assists veterinarian in all aspects of care
Restraint for physical examination, carrying out diagnostics, procedures, and medication administration
Patient diagnostics, procedures and treatment may include: IV catheter placement, blood work, urinalysis, radiographs, CPR, sedation, anesthesia, medication administration (SQ, IM, IV routes of administration), medication dose calculation, knowledge of medication adverse effects. Demonstrate clear knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques when performing procedures.
Advanced skill set includes (preferred, not required): central line placement, feeding tube placement, male and female urinary catheter placement. Advanced diagnostics including, but not limited to VCM testing, management of arterial lines, obtaining and performing ABGs, telemetry setup and monitoring. Managing patients on a ventilator or high flow oxygen device, management of BOAS, proper handling and administration of blood products, advanced medical math and CRIs.
Discharges patients including filling medication prescriptions, ensuring diagnostics and medications are complete, educating clients on at-home care, going over discharge instructions with clients
Requirements for the Role:
Minimum of 3 years working as a veterinary technician, preferably in emergency with training in critical care.
Have an understanding of all basic veterinary knowledge, including triage, disease processes, pharmacology, restraint, diagnostic imaging, phlebotomy, anesthesia, laboratory equipment and procedures, etc.
Attention to detail, with strong communication skills with both clients and team members.
