Veterinary ICU Supervisor

$30–42/hour 
Full-time opportunity at CVSS- Annapolis, Maryland
4x10s | 7am - 5pm, 8am - 6pm, 9am - 7pm

The ICU Supervisor is responsible for the daily administrative and operational coordination of the Intensive Care Unit. This position oversees workflow, staffing, patient flow, equipment readiness, training, communication, and staff accountability while supporting a safe, professional, respectful, and team-oriented workplace.

The ICU Supervisor works closely with attending veterinarians, the Surgery Supervisor, the Receiving Supervisor, and other departments to support organized patient care.

Responsibilities of an ICU Supervisor:

Department Operations

  • Coordinate daily ICU operations according to patient volume, acuity, staffing, and hospital priorities.
  • Assign staff based on patient needs, workload, training, validated competency, and legal scope of practice.
  • Monitor ICU admissions, transfers, discharges, procedures, patient acuity, and changes in workload.
  • Identify staffing, safety, equipment, supply, or workflow concerns and escalate them appropriately.
  • Adjust assignments during emergencies, unexpected absences, increased patient volume, or changes in patient acuity.
  • Maintain communication among ICU staff, veterinarians, Surgery, Receiving, and other departments.
  • Monitor ICU equipment, supplies, treatment areas, and environmental readiness.
  • Support compliance with CVSS policies, infection-control standards, safety procedures, and documentation requirements.

Staffing and Accountability

  • Monitor attendance, punctuality, scheduling needs, breaks, and department coverage.
  • Assist with staffing plans and daily schedule adjustments as assigned.
  • Set consistent and professional expectations for ICU employees.
  • Utilize coaching, counseling, and the corrective action process when appropriate and with support of the hospital manager.
  • Participate in 90-day, annual, and other performance evaluations as assigned.

Leadership and Workplace Culture

  • Promote a positive, professional, respectful, and supportive work environment.
  • Encourage teamwork, accountability, effective communication, and continuous improvement.
  • Address interpersonal concerns professionally and use the appropriate chain of command.
  • Model reliability, ethical conduct, professionalism, and compliance with CVSS policies.
  • Maintain an appropriately positive and engaging workplace while preserving patient-care standards.

Training and Competency

  • Identify ICU training needs based on patient acuity, staff performance, equipment, policy changes, and operational requirements.
  • Support orientation, onboarding, and training of new ICU employees.
  • Assist with maintaining ICU competency checklists and training records.
  • Ensure training is documented and competency-based.
  • Ensure employees perform only duties for which they are trained, validated, authorized, and legally permitted.
  • Coordinate cross-departmental training with the Surgery and Receiving Supervisors when appropriate.
  • Complete a minimum of 10 hours of annual continuing education in leadership, management, supervision, or related professional-development topics.

Clinical and Technical Duties

  • Perform ICU technical duties consistent with training, validated competency, hospital policy, and applicable law.
  • Support patient monitoring, treatment implementation, documentation, and timely escalation of concerns.
  • Confirm that staff understand patient-care priorities, assigned responsibilities, monitoring requirements, and escalation expectations.
  • Notify the attending veterinarian promptly of significant changes in patient condition, treatment concerns, staffing limitations, or safety risks.
  • Support accurate medical-record documentation and effective shift-to-shift handoffs.
  • Ensure clinical concerns are referred to the appropriate veterinarian.

Surgery–ICU Transfer Coordination

  • The ICU Supervisor shares responsibility with the Surgery Supervisor for safe and timely patient transfers between Surgery and ICU.
  • Communicating about patient readiness, ICU capacity, staffing, equipment, and anticipated transfer needs.
  • Confirming that the ICU team is prepared to receive the patient.
  • Supporting complete handoff communication, including procedure history, anesthesia status, medications, monitoring needs, equipment or drains, pending diagnostics, and care instructions.
  • Addressing incomplete handoffs, delays, equipment concerns, or staffing limitations.
  • Escalating clinical decisions or changes in treatment to the attending veterinarian
Qualifications
  • Maryland Registered Veterinary Technician preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of veterinary technician experience.
  • Previous supervisory, management, lead, or department-coordination experience preferred.
  • Experience in emergency, critical-care, specialty, anesthesia, or surgical nursing preferred.
  • Strong communication, organization, conflict-resolution, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to remain professional and composed in a high-acuity environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to staff development, patient safety, and continuing education.
