Job Description:
The Sterilization Assistant is a vital member of our hospital support team, responsible for the meticulous cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of all surgical instruments and related equipment. This role focuses exclusively on instrument processing and does not involve direct animal handling. The successful candidate will play a critical role in preventing surgical site infections and ensuring that our surgical, neurology, and internal medicine teams have properly prepared instruments for every procedure.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain sterilization equipment:
- Steam sterilization units and supplies
- Gas sterilization units and supplies
- Plasma sterilization units and supplies
- Cold pack sterilization equipment
- Ultrasonic cleaner/solution
- Knowledge of instruments, surgical packs and individual instrument care
- Wash, dry and fold all surgery laundry
- Maintain inventory and sterilize all surgical soft goods: drapes, gowns, etc
- Wash, dry, pack, check, and sterilize all surgical instrument packs
- Care and sterilization of specialized equipment:
- Laparoscopic and endoscopic equipment
- Endotracheal tubes and breathing circuits
- Containers and surgical brushes
- Dental instruments
- Ophthalmic instruments
- Stock all surgical suites with instrument packs, accessory equipment and other sterilized supplies
- Tracking and ordering of inventory supplies
- Advise Facilities Maintenance via “worxhub” or manager of issues and repairs needed
- Train and oversee new employees in all the above
Pack Prep Requirements
- Maintain and care for all the needs of the equipment
- Understand the general function and use of the equipment
- Gas Sterilization Certification required
- Knowledge of how items need to be sterilized
- Expert instrument knowledge
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- AVA, or CVT or equivalent preferred, not required
- Familiarity with sterilization techniques is required
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to multi-task
- Experience and proficiency in using EzyVet recommended, not required
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong technical skills and knowledge of veterinary laboratory procedures and techniques
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals
- Commitment to continuous learning and growth, and a desire to advance the field of veterinary medicine
- Fluent English skills (speaking and reading) required.
