Veterinary Technician Manager - Winchester, VA - Full Time


Valley Veterinary Emergency & Referral Center in Winchester, VA is hiring a full- time Veterinary Technician Manager to join our outstanding team!

Position Overview:

The Veterinary Technician Manager is a key member of the hospital leadership team, responsible for overseeing all licensed veterinary technicians (LVTs) and veterinary medical support staff. This role ensures that the hospital is fully prepared to deliver excellent medical care by providing strong leadership, effective training, and operational oversight.

The LVT Manager directly supervises shift leaders and hourly technical staff. Success in this role requires not only deep technical knowledge but also proven leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

Core Areas of Responsibility:

  • Medical Staff Management & Staffing
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels to ensure doctors are fully supported in the delivery of patient care.
  •  Lead recruitment, interviewing, and hiring efforts for technical staff.
  • Make recommendations regarding staff organization, promotions, and role development.
  • Training & Best Practices
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a robust training program for technical staff, supporting career growth and progression.
  • Establish and communicate medical protocols in partnership with the Medical Director and DVM team.
  • Routinely assess hospital operations and adjust workflows to improve efficiency, patient care, and staff support.
  • Provide ongoing guidance, communication, and training to ensure smooth and consistent operational flow.

Leadershp & Culture

  • Foster a positive hospital culture that promotes morale, engagement, and retention among staff and doctors.
  • Hold staff accountable to the hospital’s Core Values, Mission, and Team Agreements.
  • Lead by example through coaching and mentorship, prioritizing staff growth and success.
  • Conduct regular team meetings (both all-staff and departmental), ensuring strong and transparent communication.
  • Collaborate with supervisors to enhance leadership skills within their teams.
  • Drive engagement initiatives and implement action plans based on staff feedback and surveys.
  • Lead performance reviews, compensation recommendations, and disciplinary discussions in collaboration with the Hospital Manager and MDVM.

Business & Operational Management

  •  Oversee scheduling, staffing allocation, and overtime management to balance hospital needs and budget.
  • Monitor and manage labor costs, ensuring efficiency without compromising care.
  • Actively connect with staff to build trust, provide recognition, and maintain team alignment.
  • Participate in hospital management meetings and regional leadership meetings as needed.
  • Inventory,
  • Equipment, & Records Oversight
  • Supervise medical inventory and dispensary operations to ensure supplies are accurate, well-stocked, and cost-effective.
  • In collaboration with the inventory manager, monitor and maintain medical equipment, reducing repair costs by implementing staff training and preventive protocols.
  • Audit medical records and logs (anesthesia/surgery, radiology, controlled substances, etc.) to ensure compliance, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Develop and implement policies to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and safeguard compliance with medical standards.

Cross Departmental Collaboration

  • Function as a liaison between medical staff and client service/administrative teams to ensure seamless workflows across departments.
  • Partner with team members to improve processes involving patient scheduling, client charges, invoicing, and discharge procedures.
  • Partner with inventory team to monitor cost controls and controlled substances.
  • Support hospital leadership in addressing and resolving client medical concerns.

Qualifications:

  • Current Licensed Veterinary Technician with extensive experience in emergency/critical care preferred.
  • Proven leadership experience overseeing large veterinary medical teams.
  • Strong knowledge of medical operations, labor management, and inventory cost controls.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills across both medical and administrative teams.
  • Demonstrated success in recruitment, hiring, and staff retention initiatives.
  • The position requires flexibility in scheduling and the ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.

  • Compensation is based on experience and skill set. $65,000 - $75,000/ annually.
