
Upstate Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (UVS) is seeking an experienced Lead Emergency Veterinary Technician to help guide our Emergency & Critical Care team while continuing to provide exceptional patient care. This is a hands-on leadership role designed for a skilled technician who thrives on the hospital floor, enjoys supporting teammates, and can effectively manage workflow in a dynamic emergency environment.
As the Lead Emergency Veterinary Technician, you will serve as the shift's primary resource for technicians and assistants, helping coordinate patient care, staffing, communication, and workflow while ensuring our patients receive safe, efficient, and compassionate care.

This role combines advanced technical skills with day-to-day operational leadership responsibilities, including:
Providing hands-on support to the ER team throughout the shift
Leading by example and assisting wherever patient care demands are greatest
Serving as the primary point of contact for team questions, concerns, and problem-solving
Monitoring patient flow and department workflow to prevent bottlenecks
Adjusting staffing assignments in real time based on patient volume and acuity
Coordinating team coverage during call-outs and changing caseload demands
Conducting morning and evening team huddles to review caseloads, priorities, and operational updates
Communicating changes, updates, and expectations clearly throughout the shift
Completing scheduled emergency department acuity assessments
Maintaining and updating diversion tracking as needed
Supporting team members through coaching, mentorship, and real-time feedback
Identifying training opportunities and partnering with leadership to support professional development
Addressing client service, patient care, and team concerns promptly and professionally
Escalating significant concerns to hospital leadership when appropriate
Promoting a positive, respectful, and collaborative team culture
Monitoring supply and equipment needs and communicating shortages proactively
Sharing operational updates, concerns, and feedback with hospital leadership
Following through on outstanding issues to ensure resolution
Veterinary Technician experience in Emergency, Critical Care, Specialty, or high-volume General Practice settings
Previous leadership, charge technician, shift lead, or supervisory experience preferred
Strong understanding of emergency patient triage and workflow management
Ability to prioritize competing demands in a fast-paced environment
Excellent communication, coaching, and conflict-resolution skills
Commitment to teamwork, accountability, and exceptional patient care
Ability to remain calm, organized, and decisive during high-pressure situations
Credentialed Veterinary Technician (LVT, RVT, or CVT) preferred
Emergency and Critical Care experience strongly preferred
Experience mentoring, training, or leading veterinary support staff
