This role offers a dynamic mix of diagnostic imaging and surgical procedures, providing variety and opportunities to grow your clinical expertise. Your day typically begins with MRI, where you’ll monitor patients under anesthesia, caring for cats and dogs with a wide range of medical histories. Once imaging is complete, you’ll transition to the OR for the remainder of the day, with occasional CT procedures as scheduled.

In the surgical setting, you’ll be involved throughout the patient’s anesthetic experience—from induction and preparation to monitoring and recovery—supporting a variety of procedures. You’ll work alongside multiple specialty services, gaining exposure to diverse cases and developing a deeper understanding of peri-procedural patient care.

Job Description
The VTS of Anesthesia provides exceptional patient care while supporting advanced neurology and surgical procedures through anesthesia monitoring, diagnostics, perioperative nursing care, and patient recovery. This role works closely with board-certified specialists and plays a critical role in ensuring patient safety throughout MRI, CT, surgical, and diagnostic procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor anesthesia for neurology and surgical procedures including MRI, CT scans, CSF taps, myelograms, and surgery.
  • Provide comprehensive patient care before, during, and after anesthesia and recovery.
  • Perform phlebotomy, sample collection, and peripheral IV catheter placement.
  • Administer IV fluid therapy and monitor patient response throughout procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain anesthesia equipment, monitoring devices, surgical instruments, and MRI suites.
  • Monitor ECG, pulse oximetry, blood pressure, capnography, and other critical patient parameters.
  • Maintain accurate anesthesia records, including medications administered and patient monitoring data.
  • Assist with neurologic diagnostic procedures and advanced surgical cases.
  • Calculate drug dosages, prepare CRIs, and administer anesthetic medications under veterinary supervision.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to anesthetic and medical emergencies.
  • Communicate effectively with doctors, technicians, and clients regarding patient care and status updates.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and fully stocked treatment, surgery, and MRI areas.
VTS Responsibilities
  • Working alongside the anesthesiologist(s) creating and administering anesthetic protocols, including inhalant and injectable anesthesia
  • Monitoring patients during anesthesia, and intervening as needed
  • Performing epidurals, locoregional and nerve blocks
  • Assessing pain levels and implementing analgesic protocols
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed records of anesthetic events, patient responses, and interventions
  • Ensuring that anesthesia equipment is properly maintained
  • Working closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other staff and departments to ensure optimal patient care
  • Participating in team meetings and contributing to service protocols and procedures
  • Staying current with advancements in veterinary anesthesia and analgesia
  • Attending workshops, seminars, and training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge
  • Training new and existing staff
  • Offering CE other learning opportunities outside the OR 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Veterinary Technician Specialist in Anesthesia REQUIRED
  • Five or more years of experience working as a credentialed veterinary nursing team member.
  • FOUR or more years of anesthesia experience required.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced specialty hospital environment.
  • Strong understanding of anesthesia monitoring, pharmacology, and surgical procedures.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and organizational skills
  • Experience in specialty, emergency, surgery, or neurology environments preferred.
  • Fluent English skills (speaking and reading) required.
