Registered Veterinary Technician, Emergency | $28–$34/hour

Schedule: Full-Time | Three 12-hour shifts | Rotating weekends
Compensation: $28–$34/hour + $4/hour eligible shift premium
Maritime Veterinary Emergency + Specialty Centre (MVESC) is hiring a Veterinary Technician, Emergency to join our 24/7 Emergency & Critical Care team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This full-time opportunity is ideal for an experienced RVT who wants to strengthen their ER and Critical Care skills while working alongside a collaborative team in a state-of-the-art specialty and emergency animal hospital.
Compensation
- $28–$34/hour, commensurate with experience and skill level
- $4/hour shift premium in addition to base pay for eligible shifts:
- Monday–Thursday: 7:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.
- Any shifts between Friday at 7:00 p.m. through Monday at 7:00 a.m.

ResponsibilitiesAs an Emergency Veterinary Technician, you’ll play an important role in providing advanced nursing care to urgent, emergency, and critically ill patients. You’ll use your technical skills, clinical judgment, and communication experience to support patients, clients, veterinarians, and the broader care team.- Apply your Emergency and Critical Care knowledge to help stabilize and treat urgent and critically ill patients.
- Perform Veterinary Technician procedures including venipuncture, IV catheter placement, medication administration, radiography, patient preparation and recovery, and anesthesia monitoring.
- Provide attentive nursing care for critical, non-ambulatory, and trauma patients, including monitoring and physiotherapy when appropriate.
- Assist with ER triage, patient assessments, emergency procedures, diagnostics, and treatment plans.
- Obtain and review detailed patient histories and communicate effectively with clients during high-stress situations.
- Maintain accurate medical records and collaborate closely with veterinarians and the broader specialty and emergency care team.
- Advocate for patient comfort and safety throughout hospitalization.
- Provide clients with patient updates and clearly review treatment plans and medical procedures.
- Prepare treatment estimates, review them with pet owners, and support accurate billing and invoicing.
- Contribute to departmental initiatives focused on advancing emergency care and improving patient outcomes.
- Build strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and the community through teamwork, professionalism, and empathy.
Qualifications- Registered Veterinary Technician licensure required with the Eastern Veterinary Technicians Association (EVTA) and Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association (NSVMA)
- 2+ years of Veterinary Technician experience preferred, ideally in ER and/or Critical Care
- Experience with inpatient care, laboratory procedures, radiology, and critical thinking in a fast-paced animal hospital environment
- Strong technical skills and the ability to remain organized under pressure
- Compassionate, dependable team player who thrives in a collaborative environment
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust with clients and colleagues
- Detail-oriented and motivated to continue learning and growing in emergency and specialty medicine
- Fluent English speaking and reading skills required
